  1. Compost bins can be created out of a variety of material, including, wood, plastic, fencing...the most important aspect is to have excellent ventilation in the physical structure of the compost bin to allow air circulation.

Compost bins allows all of the organic matter from food preparation to be placed in the bin (egg shells, fruits and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds...etc) and via the process of healthy bacteria this matter is broken down into a soil-that is excellent for the garden.

Compost bins can be purchased at any of the larger home and building supply stores.

Composting has a few very clear rules-do not compost any meat, fat, fish bones or dairy products-they are slow to break down and tend to draw rodents.

  2. Its like a mini trash can where you put old vegetables or old fruits so you can you can use later for your garden instead of mulch or manure.

  3. A compost bin is used to store manure, rotten organic material, or other substances that can be used as a fertilizer. The best way to use one is a shovel or a back hole. Then, figure out how how you plan to distribute the fertilizer.

  4. Its just a large container really, you need to put you food waste (like veg peelings etc) and leaves and garden waste etc and compress it in the container.  It will eventually break down and make a fertile soil type material and does wonders for your garden!

  5. Before I sold the house, I had a compost bin that I had in the back year, and used it for my vegetable garden. Mostly, I used grass clippings, potato and carrot peels, and any wastes from other vegetables. Each year, I grew tomatoes, corn, string beans, scallions, parsley, and strawberries. I had a 5X5 area bordered by lumber, and covered with a screen.
