I'm doing an essay on: 'All junk food should be banned from school canteens'. And i was told that i had to do a contention for the second paragraph after the introduction. But i still don't know what it means after listening to my teacher.

Is contention where you disagree, agree, your opinion or something like that?

Please explain as simple as you can and give an example for the topic.

  1. A point maintained in an argument, or a line of argument taken in its support; the subject matter of discussion or strife; a position taken or contended for.

So, for example, you could say "My contention is that, although junk food should not be the only food on the menu, it should certainly be there somewhere."  And then go on to expand on that.

In fact you don't need to use the words 'My contention is"

    Hope this helps
