What is a core filter?

I bought a new video camera and it came with this little thing called a core filter..i'm supposed to wrap the usb cable on/in it..what is it for??? what does it do???

it contains ferrite and the purpose is to keep RF hash from radiating from the computer, using the USB wire as an antenna.
