What is a coup plot?

Is it a plot to overturn ONLY a government? or is it more general than that?

  2. It's almost always used when talking about taking over a government with force, usually military.

If you look up "coup" in the dictionary, it will probably specify the most common usage of the term.  If my memory serves me correctly, coup would generally refer to government.  However it can be used to refer to almost anything, from overthrowing your school administrators, a ship's captain, or any other person with accepted control of something.  Elections can sometimes be referred to as a coup as well if a large number of people from the same political party are replaced with the opposing party.
