"Crack" train, a.k.a. 'hot shot', 'red ball', 'cannon ball', 'varnish', or contemporary terms, 'pig', 'shooter', 'expediter', 'forwarder' and probably a few dozen regional terms.

  5. It means a train equipped for a fast operating schedule, and given priority in most situations over other traffic.  It is a somewhat antique expression, and there are other expressions more commonly used nowadays for priority trains.

The Acela would be an example of a crack train nowadays.  To find out what it used to mean, look up "20th Century Limited," or "Broadway Limited."

  6. A crack train is not a drug smuggling special from Mexico as one might expect.

Crack in this context means the highest priority fast mover.

In the past it might have been a special high priority mail train, or in the '50s there were silk trains that were known as crack trains, also given to high priority passenger specials that the railroads used to run.
