  1. Since you're asking this in Astronomy & Space, I assume you mean some kind of scientific event.

    - the Phoenix lander found ice on Mars

    - the Stardust probe brought particles from a comet back to Earth

    - over 300 planets have been found so far around other stars

    - Pluto was demoted from planet to dwarf planet

Lots of other science stories if you do a little research.

  2. If you're talking astronomy-wise, there was the McNaught comet from 2007, which was seen by many in Austrailia.  Take a look here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2006_P1

  3. If you want something astronomy related then....the Phoenix lander on Mars...did confirm the presence of water on Mars.

As a result...that mission has been extended for 5 more weeks from it's original time table.

No one I know of...related to astronomy...has died recently.

  4. The biggest astronomy news of the year is the accidental imaging of the xray precursor radiation of a supernova.  The researcher was using the Swift xray (etc) satellite to view a supernova from a month earlier, and happened to catch the first few minutes of another.  She very quickly acted to not only get the other instruments working on it, but also other observatories around the world.  As a result, much more information is now known about this kind of supernova than before.  This is a first ever event.  It was theorized that these supernovae produced and xray flash first, but none had ever been seen.  Well, you have to be in space to see one, and xrays are hard to detect (expensive) even if you're already in space.
