What is a data network for my palm treo?

I have an unlocked gsm palm treo 650 that i will be using with tmobile. They said they can upgrade to a data network or something so i can use my phone better. Will it still work for calls and text messages if i dont buy the data plan? or do you guys recommend the data package? thanks

Data package just means you can go on the internet with out get charged a certain fee per kb you download for browsing the web. With a data plan, depending on coverage, you can have a large download cap, meaning you can surf alot of webpages with out getting charged more.

it might not work without a data plan, --i purchased a blackberry 8703 a year back through us cellular. i recently got the same model through my company as a work phone with permission to use for personal use... i intended to cancel my data service on my personal blackberry and they told me that it cannot be used for just text and voice - id have to keep the data with it
