Question:

What is a deckhead?

In a disagreement with a coworker, he told me I was being a deckhead. I always thought the deckhead was basically the first level ceiling...the bottom of the deck.

I've been trying to puzzle this out, and the only thing I can think of is he is confusing some terms. Perhaps he thinks a "deckhead" is the head of the deckhands? As in, perhaps he looks up to me as an authoritative figure? In such a case, I think officer of the deck would be more fitting...but perhaps he doesn't get out on the water much.

What's your take on it?

  1. I get called that all the time. I don't know what it means, so I take it as a compliment.

  2. Does he have an accent?  Is English his first or second language?

  3. I'm going out on a limb here, but is he trying to be clever and call you a d!ckhead without getting in trouble?

  4. Maybe he is saying slang for Richard. Like d**k Sargent

  5. idk

  6. Your coworker sounds like an icehole, man!

  7. Where the deck heads.......................to

  8. A deckhead usually refers to a person working on the flight deck of a carrier.  He could have meant a deckhand which can be used as an insult, depending.  Most enlisted would rather be called a deckhand or brown shoe, than a black shoe, which is an officer or chief, which usually works on frigates or mps.  An officer would take to be a calling a deckhead or deckhand as an insult.  Just your matter of perspective, I suppose.

  9. You had it right at first dont know what the heck he is thinking when he calls you that but i would say its not intended to be a compliment

  10. maybe he was referring to a deck-hand. This is someone who helps out anyway they can, on board a boat.

  11. It's some guy who is really rude and obnoxious...oh, you said DECKhead.  I think that's just the underside of a deck.  You know, the floor of your cabin is the deck, the deckhead would be the ceiling of the cabin directly below you....hope that helps, and sorry for the lame joke...I couldn't help myself.  Maybe the guy is phonetically challanged.

  12. That guy who cut me off on the way home today!

  13. Search "Shoes" on YouTube.

    That video says it all.

Watch it -- I promise, it's worth it.

  14. Deckhead is the ceiling in a ship (any deck)

    Bulkhead is the wall

    Deck is the floor

    Hatch is a floor door

Dog is a closing mechanism for a hatch

    ladder is a stair case

    painter is a rope

    etc....

  15. It 's a woman on a boat that likes to give... Oh never mind, I'm on thin ice as is.
