  1. In mathematics, the derivative of a function is basically another line that describes the slope of the first line.

for example, imagine the function f(x) = x + 1. This is shows as a straight line that is at a 45° angle that crosses at (0, 1). At any point on the line, it is shown as a 45° angle, or a rise-over-run or 1/1 = 1. Because the derivative is 1 at any point on the line, then it is represented as a straight line that lies flat at the (x , 1), regardless of what "x" is.

Hopefully this very simplified version explains enough to understand what it is and how it could be found as useful. Think of it as the description of the slope of the line.

derivative is just slope... simple as that... it's an expression of change

    uses: say for example:

acceleration is measuring a change in velocity right?

so the derivative of velocity is acceleration

so you can find things like that.

    here's another one.

    derviative of distance is velocity

there's so many other ones, but its a rate of change.
