  1. DSLR stands for digital single-lens reflex camera.

SLR is the mirror system used in the camera.

A DSLR basically does the same things as a digital camera but higher quality. You can also buy REALLY expensive lenses and flash units. They are heavier and much more expensive. No DSLR camera has a video mode.

  2. The above answers are right.

SLR means Single Lens Reflex and until less than ten years ago, all SLR's were 35 mm or medium format.

Now the same designs have been modified to capture images on a sensor rather than film.  For that reason, all the lenses used by pros and others on 35 mm SLR's can be used on the complementary DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex)

  3. SLR means single lens reflex. The camera has a mirror and prism that you use to let you look from the viewfinder through the lens. When the picture is taken the mirror moves up to allow light to go though the shutter as it opens. The really good thing is that what you see in the viewfinder is almost exactly the same as what gets in the camera. You can see where your focal point is. And compose the shot a little better.

SLR cameras do tend to give you more control as you can change lenses and set the aperature and shutterspeeds, ISO and such. This type of camera also allows through the lens light metering. You can change lenses to go wide angle or telephoto as needed.

SLRs can be film or digital.

  4. SLR stands for single-lens reflex. A mirror is placed directly behind the lens, reflecting the image into the viewfinder. An advantage of this is that you get to see exactly what the camera sees. They can be film or digital- though in the latter, it is more often referred to as a 'dslr'. SLR cameras have always been a hallmark in image quality, albeit with a (possibly) heavy price tag and heavy weight. SLRS has a 'hotshoe', usually on top of the lens, which means an external flash can be added. In addition, the lens are interchangeable, which adds flexibility if your willing to pay the price. Last but not least, in digital slrs, the imaging chip (ccd/cmos) is bigger than a compact camera's, which results in considerably higher image quality.

  5. these are digital camera used by professional photographers. pictures you've seen in magazines  are probably taken with one of these. these are very customizable camera usually have alot of optional parts you can buy to fine tune it.
