  1. Digital refers to anything that is in 'binary code'. On Digital Electronics, the Digital Decoder translates the binary code (computer code, ones and zeros, on and off) into a usable analog signal. Then it can be amplified and filtered. A digital decoder could refer to a up-converter, or down-converter. Analog can be up-converted to digital, and digital can be down-converted to analog. When analog is up-converted to digital, sometimes it is 'compressed'. This degrades the quality of the original recording.
