What is a digital out cable use for ?

I have one on the back of my PS3 & HDTV but i don't know what they do ?

& can i use it at the same time i have my HDMI cable plug in

  1. it is a fiber optic audio cable port.. it can handle full surround down one small cable... but i dont think you need it with HDMI in fact if im not mistaken HDMI will not let you use them together


  2. That one cable can carry mono sound (1.0) or up to 5.1 Dolby Digital.

    Run the output from the TV to a surround-sound receiver.  This will give you 5.1 sound from your HD channels and I think it will also pass-through the sound from your games and BluRay disks.

  4. It is used to transfer the digital audio signal from one device to another, and keep the signal in the digital domain, rather than to convert it to analog signal.

    You can use the digital out cable at the same time as HDMI.
