What is a directory?

I'm having problems uploading a theme onto my blackberry, so a website said to make sure I have the .cod and .alx files in the same directory. What's that?

Pleeeeease please help!

A directory is a named group of related files that are separated by the naming convention from other groups of files.

and what the website means is that you have to make sure upload  the .cod and .axl  files in the same place or folder in your blackberry.
