  1. "DocuTech" refers to a series of high performance laser printers made by Xerox - whoops, The Document Company. A DocuTech model 135 with the PostScript option is essentially a high-speed PostScript laser printer and a high-speed duplicator - or loosely, Xerox machine - melded into a 3,193 lb unit. It prints 135 pages per minute.

DocuTech is the model name given by Xerox Corporation to an electronic production-line publishing system. This system integrated Xerox-branded scanners, processing software and production printers to produce a single workflow solution for digital publishing, and is credited with helping to start the print-on-demand industry.

With its ability to scan, edit and archive books for later retrieval, and output stitched or tape-bound books, the DocuTech 135 (DT135), introduced in 1990, was arguably the first fully-integrated "on-demand" publishing system.

The DocuTech 6135 is an improved version of the DT135, with a Sun Microsystems workstation controller replacing the original controller and scanner. Additional improvements include an optional VLD laser assembly, increasing the print resolution to 600 x 1200 dpi.

The DocuTech system's main competitor in the field of print-on-demand production plant is IBM's InfoPrint system.

    DocuTech 135 features:

The DocuTech uses 'scan once' print many, technology.

The DocuTech can scan images up to 11" x 17" at a resolution of 400 dpi. Jobs are fed through the scanner once, at a rate of up to 23 pages per minute, and the images are then digitized and stored. You can send files over your network to the print shop manager for easy fulfillment.

        Electronic Manipulation

Once images are input to the DocuTech, their contrast and brightness can be enhanced; they can be resized, cropped or masked; line art, photographs and halftones can be placed into text pages. Each file is manipulated separately; then, multiple files can be combined into one ready-to-print document.

        Output

Flexible output from 8.5" x 11" and 11" x 17" sizes. Paper types include bond, text, book, cover, perforated, carbonless and transparency. The DocuTech can load up to three kinds of paper at once, and one document can include multiple paper types.
