What is a double dressage bridle?

I was just wondering when to use a double dressage bridle and how it works ( looks complicated ) . What function does it have?

the first answer was right , I got a bit confused about how the snaffle was attached But needless to say

You won't have to worry about using one for a long time .

reason is ,Once your at that level which would be High level 3 you don't need one

and when you get there You will know all this already

A double bridle is used to provide both a snaffle (called the bradoon) and a curb bit  (called the bit) which can be used independently of each other.

An extra strap (the bradoon hanger) goes from the cheek piece of the bradoon, under the headstall and through the brow band loops, to the other side of the bradoon.  The horse has two bits in his mouth, with reins to each.  The snaffle generally lays behind the curb, so that using the snaffle does not engage the curb.

While it looks somewhat similar to a pelham bit, it actually provides a great deal more flexibility and nuance in communicating with the horse.

The bradoon is used for flexing left or right and changing speed faster or slower.

The curb is used for raising and lowering the head and achieving full collection.

Today, most dressage riders ride "on the bradoon" - the bradoon is used for most signals, while the curb rein is kept slightly looser and used only as necessary.

It's best reserved for well trained riders on well trained horses.
