What is a down payment on a car? Do you always have to put money down?

I was wondering if you go to a dealership, do you have to put a down payment? Is it required? Why do you have to put money down on one?

you don't have to put a down payment but if you do it helps lower your monthly bill, in some car offerings they say to put the money down because thats the only way that payment will come up

no...a down payment is not required. It is based on your credit...bad credit, you will need a down payment. I havent put a down payment on any of my last 4 cars.
