  1. I have one and basically consider it a 1 iron. It's difficult for me to hit off the deck unless I have a great lie in the short grass in the fairway. I mainly use it off the tee for hitting into tight fairways where I am willing to trade distance for accuracy, or if I'm just having a rough day with the driver.

  2. It is just a replacement for a one or two iron.  Most have a hybrid type shape with the center of gravity a little further back than an iron making them easier to hit.  Usually used off the tee on a hole where accuracy is more important that distance.  But overall they are a gimmick - if you could hit a one iron you wouldn't need one.

  3. It's the lowest lofted iron and difficult to hit because of the loft. Unless you have difficulty hitting any of the wood-shaped clubs it's really not necessary to carry it in your bag. You're better off carrying another wedge.

  4. A driving iron was conceived in the early days by golf club makers. It was an iron which had the least degrees of loft and was used for distance driving from the teeing ground. The driving woods came later in the club development circa and lead to clubs which were weighted differently and were capable of longer hits than the irons. Thus , the driving iron has become a relic except for those very proficient in iron play or extremely poor in wood play.

  5. A driving iron replaces a lower iron like a 3 or 2 iron depending on the degree.  It's kinda like a hyrbrid but more like an iron then a wood.  When you hit it try hitting more like an 8 iron than a 3 iron, what i mean by that is try hitting it striking hard down on it instead of a sweeping motion like you are supposed to hit a low degree iron.  I hope this helps.

  6. Gr8 Question...I just picked one up just for laughs...

From what I have found out for myself is this...

When you need a shot that is too long for the irons, and too tight for woods...this is like a sniper's rifle...it provides me with the length of a fairway wood and the accuracy of an iron.  With a Kevlar face, I am able to adjust my length form 225yds (sea-level) down to 165yds for a run up shots.  Now I understand why some play with 1 or 2 irons in the bag.

I am still trying to warrant this in the bag...I am a fairway wood lover and this is a different weapon of choice for me.
