hi- i recently bought a house to find out that the duct work is completely messed up - seems silly to repair it when its in such bad condition so I figured it would be best to go ahead and replace the entire system which should add value to the home. The unit has been acting up since I bought the place and I have already sunk $800 in repairs this season alone. So, I am thinking of replacing the entire system- unit and ductwork. I am located in SC- the house is less than 1200 square feet and there are currently 9 duct vents total throughout the house. It is a one story home with decent sized crawl space. Any advice on what kind of unit I need, and what a fair cost would be to install everything would be much appreciated. thanks

  1. You'll need a minimum 15 SEER 4-ton unit. The cost installed with ducts will run between $3,000 - $5,000

  2. To do it cheap, get a low efficiency a/c unit (13 seer not 15), and an %80 efficient furnace. If you're replacing all of the ducts, the furnace, and both sections of your a/c, the price can range anywhere from $4000 to $8000 depending on the extent of the ductwork. Keep in mind the price could be even more. There is more labor involved removing the existing ducts and replacing them. The fact that the unit is in a craw space doesn't make it too appealing to any HVAC contractor, which in turn may drive the price up

  3. They sell ductless heat pumps/ac now.  You may want to consider that and remove the ducts yourself.
