What is a fair price for this diamond?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on upgrading the diamond on my wife's engagement ring. I've been offered this diamond from the jeweler I bought the original ring from:

1.01 ct

G color

SI2 clarity

Round Brilliant

EGL Certificate

Does $5650 seem like a reasonable price for this stone?

Sounds reasonable to me.

Before you upgrade her diamond, make sure she wants you to do that. Some women want the original ring, no matter how small for sentimental reasons.

Sounds about right to me!  You Can always get it appraised to get an accurate price and you would have the paperwork for the buyer.

It is a fair price, but as a suggestion you better buy it quickly diamond prices are going up up up.  Good Luck with the purchase.

EGL is not that great of a cert,not as good as GIA IGI AGS etc.

Its ok but if you take the diamond to be graded by any of the above mentioned labs it will have a lower grade.

The right price for this diamond is 3000$ IF it had a very good cut to excellent cut and lower down to 2500$ if it had a poor cut.

A similar quality diamond by GIA will be in the 4300$-4800$ if it had a VG cut-EX cut.

My advice to you is not buy that diamond.Go online from any of these stores

They are known & trustworthy stores that sell certified diamonds with really good policies including a lifetime upgrade policy so if you decide that you want to get an even bigger diamond later they will deduct the full price if your old diamond (only James has this policy) as well as many policies including 30 days return policy.You can read more about them.

depends on where you're getting it...wholesale vs. retail. never pay retail, esp when places like bluenile.com are available. we got ours from a direct diamond wholesaler...

edit: just checked on bluenile, your diamond should be between 4-5400

Are you joking? The only reason I'd even consider paying that much is for the quality of colour. If thats what you want, youre better off going to the mall for it.

Sounds about right to me. The average price for a decent quality per carat is $6000. I'm no expert, but I did my homework when I was looking at diamonds and I think for that price you might be able to get better clarity (VS 1 or 2)

The best thing to do is check around with other jewelers - they may be able to get you a better price. Unless you definitely want to stay with yours :)

Blue Nile says prices are $3860 up to over $6000 depending on the cut of the stone from fair to signature ideal. It depends on the dimensions of your stone.

Edit: Make sure it says U.S. EGL laboratory. From my readings, that lab is reputable and they grade clarity higher than the other two.
