What is a female vampire called?

brought about by a joke, i have been trying to remember what a female vampire is called. for some reason i'm somewhat certain that it is not 'vampire', but something else.

Vampire refers to both male and female. Some people prefer to use 'vampiress' for the feminine even though 'female vampire' is perfectly correct. You might be confusing it with succubus, the female equivalent of incubus, lustful creatures of the night... but they're not exactly vampires. There's also the lamia the half-serpent; not quite a vampire, but is said to charm unwitting men before sucking their blood.
