I usually see it used in a bleaching mixture (potassium ferricyanide) to remove silvery overtones when developing photographs.  Potassium ferricyanide can be used in medicine to identify the presence of high concentration of iron in biological tissue, though not in tissue still attached to people, as it is potentially extremely toxic (being part Cyanide).

    I believe the US Department of Energy also uses ferricyanide(somehow) in the storing of toxic waste, but how I am uncertain.
