someone complimented me and my partner as a

"fetching couple of misfits"

they said to take it as a compliment? what does this mean, thanks so much

  1. Hi,

       Well, the person probably meant that you were an attractive or pleasing couple and perhaps the person was teasing you a little by calling you misfits.  The "misfits" implies that you are in some way--perhaps dress, behavior, or conduct--outside the mainstream.  It might even imply that your being outside the mainsteam was interesting and pleasing.  I suppose you could take it as a compliment, perhaps sort of what people in the US might call a left-handed compliment.  It's sort of hard to say without looking the person in the eye and seeing you and your partner.

        Actually, the word "fetching" is not used much in the US any more.  You see it quite a lot in older novels, but very seldom in everyday speech.

    Although the term fetching isn't used much anymore.

    Fetching = Cute.

    More or less.

    Misfits = Anyone outside "normal" society.

    Whatever that is.
