What is a field guide?

I have this project where you need to make a field guide to alien forms you've made up, but I'm not exactly sure what a field guide is,help?

A field guide is a book with pictures of different species (fish, birds, trees, etc) and a basic description. The purpose of the guide is so that when you see something in the wild, you can look it up in your book to find out more about it.
