  1. Basically, it is a document providing details of where you plan to be going and what you plan to be doing with your boat, with the idea of saving precious time for rescue in the event there are problems.

    You leave a float plan with someone on land who will follow up with you if they do not hear from you on a timely basis. They will call the authorities and give them the information on your float plan. The authorities will then try to find you and make sure you are alright.
