  1. A fluorescent lamp or fluorescent tube is a gas-discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor in argon or neon gas, resulting in a plasma that produces short-wave ultraviolet light. This light then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light.

Unlike incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps always require a ballast to regulate the flow of power through the lamp. In common tube fixtures (typically 4 ft (122 cm) or 8 ft (244 cm) in length), the ballast is enclosed in the fixture. Compact fluorescent light bulbs may have a conventional ballast located in the fixture or they may have ballasts integrated in the bulbs, allowing them to be used in lampholders normally used for incandescent lamps.

  2. A fluorescent light tube has mercury vapor in it. When electricity is run through it, it causes the mercury vapor to  give off ultraviolet light. The inside of the tube is painted with a material that fluoresces, which means glows when hit by ultraviolet light.

  3. Allow me to give the link to the wikipedia site that Constance copied and pasted her answer from, but forgot to give credit to.

  4. A gas inside a vaccum tube that when electricity or battery is applied it glows. If a leak occurs, the gas will escape & won't produce the glow anymore, it's busted.
