  1. a focus group is normally used for marketing purposes. for example a company wants to make a product to sell. they get a groupd of people and put them in a room and show them the product to see their reactions  and what they think of the product and also if they would change anything on the product. theres usually someone writing what they say down or recording it.

  2. Focus groups is a technique used by advertisers and political pollsters to see how people think about things.  It can be no more complicated than getting some people in a room 10-20 people, and showing them an ad, or letting them taste something, and then asking what they think, asking them to discuss it.

I have heard that political pollsters often give everyone a little box with a k**b on it, then show them a political ad.  They tell them to turn the k**b up or down depending on how they feel about what the politician is saying at that moment.  They show them a fake ad, one that they made that they don't expect to buy airtime for.  They gather an average of these numbers, second by second, with a computer, so they can see exactly what in the ad people like and don't like.  They use this information in their real ads.

  3. group of people who are sometimes hired to decide weather a product is good or not.
