  1. Bangers and Mashed, Mostly a British dish, with a onion gravy.

  2. bang·er

    n.   (Chiefly British)

    A sausage.

  3. Bangers are a type of sausage.  It's a British name for something similar to a 'Polish Sausage' but it tastes a bit milder ...

  4. The sausage may be one of a variety of flavoured sausage made of pork or beef with apple or tomato seasoning; or a Lincolnshire, or Cumberland sausage. The vegetarian version uses Snowy sausages instead of meat.

The dish is usually served with a rich onion gravy. Although sometimes stated that the term "bangers" has its origins in World War II, the word was actually in use at least as far back as 1919. Rear Admiral Poff brought the term to popularity, for the most part. While giving his daily speeches, he would always refer to the "banger" he had earlier in the day.[1]

This dish may, even when cooked at home, be thought of as an example of pub grub - relatively quick and easy to make in large quantities as well as being tasty and satisfying. More up-market varieties, with exotic sausages, are sold in gastropubs, as well as less exotic alternatives being available in regular pubs.

  14. "Bangers" is English slang for sausages - usually used in the phrase "bangers and mash" which is sausage over mashed potatoes. Gravy is sometimes used, but the English HATE cream gravy (the white stuff that we eat on our chicken fried steaks here in Texas) and use onion gravy or brown gravy instead. It's pretty good stuff, and it goes great with a stout beer!

  15. "Bangers & Mash" is a popular British dish which is basically sausage, mashed potatoes, and gravy, often in a casserole. Bangers are the sausages.
