1. In theory, a formal dance for adults means tailsuits for gentlemen and evening gowns for ladies. Semi-formal means dinner jackets (tuxedos) for gentlemen. Informal equates to business suits.

In the US especially, and even more for adolescents, the standards are somewhat relaxed, dropping the requirements for dress by a degree or sometimes even two. Homecomings vary but tend to be semi-formal.

  2. There are different levels of formality at dances. A dance like homecoming normally has girls wearing shorter, knee-length dresses and the guys wearing nice pants and a dress shirt. But dresses like prom and winter ball are also formals. At those types, girls tend to wear long dresses and boys wear suits or tuxes.

  3. well, it depends on your school. At my high school, our homecoming dances were semi-formal. This meant girls had to wear dresses but they can be more casual (not too casual like a day dress though) and usually short (like cocktail dresses) and guys don't have to wear a tux but they need to have dress shoes and a dress shirt. Some schools have informal homecomings which means you can wear anything that doesn't break your school's dress code. There are some that make homecoming formal though. Then girls would have to wear very formal dresses, they can be very long floor length or even short but made of a good material. Guys will wear tux or a nice suit. And you should get a corsage for your date. The actual dancing and music and such will probably be the same no matter what.
