  1. Actually, a fret is the metal wire that defines the notes on  guitar. You press the strings down close behind the frets to create different pitches for chords and/or melodies.


  2. the space between the skinny slits on the neck.  i don't know the correct wording.

    To play different notes, you place your finger immediately behind the desired fret. ("Behind" = the side of the fret closer to the headstock where the tuners are).
