What is a front clip and why do i need one

i want to put a new engine (sr20det) in my car (240sx) but the mechanic said i needed a new front clip to install it? what does he mean by front clip and why does he need it to install it. I thought all you needed was engine mounts that could support the bigger engine.

The front clip is a term used to describe all the sheet metal from the firewall forward. Those cars had the mounts welded in as part of the sheet metal.

The clip is a body term, your mechanic is correct. The bigger engine needs more support.
