  1. Take day trips to visit Versailles or Giverney (Claude Monet's home where he painted his famous water lily and Japanese bridge paintings).

Montmartre is always fun and lots happening.

  2. shopping

  3. There is a tour of the sewers that I hear is fun. I also did a tour of the Catacombs of Paris that was cool. Lots of bones. BTW there is a 'secret' entrance into the Louvre if there is a big lineup at the front entrance. Generally only locals use it when it is crazy busy in the summer.

  4. 1) Have dinner with an icon of the Hippie era.

Jim Haynes is one of the founders of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and founder of the London Traverse Theatre Company. He started Suck, the sexual freedom newspaper, in Amsterdam in 1969 and taught Media Studies and Sexual Politics at the University of Paris 8.

He throws a dinner party every Sunday night. The crowd will include college professors, artists, the occasional rock star of famous actor. Give him a phone call or send him an email and you'll be invited. Details are on his website at: http://www.jim-haynes.com/index.htm

    2) Go Rollerskating

Every Friday night except when there is rain, the City of Paris and the Paris Rollerskating Association organize a skate thru the streets of Paris from about 10 PM till 1 AM.

    3) Become a member of the least exclusive club in the world

The Café Metropole Club meets every Thursday after noon. membership is very exclusive...you have to show up. details can be found here: http://www.metropoleparis.com/aclub.html the people who show up are a coolection of expatriates and tourists. A good place to meet some nice people and get some good advice about current events.

    4) Become the star of a comedy routine

Check out the big plaza in front of the Centre Pompidu (Which contains the Museum of Modern Art). On most sunny afternoons you'll find all sorts of street entertainers there. Among these will almost always be some guys doing big involved audience participation comedy bits. When they call for volunteers (and they always do) don't hesitate to stand up. The fact that you probably don't speak French will be NO problem. These guys tend to be very good and very funny. You'll have a great time and if you can have someone snap a picture you'll have a great story to tell when you get home (and a photo to prove it).

In terms of entertainment, perhaps someplace like Georges Cafe at 4, rue de la Huchette (5th) is what you are looking for:

La Scala at 188 bis rue de Rivoli in the 1st is gigantic. Its website states their music is "Funky to Happy Dance, from Deep House to R&B and New Jack" Check it out yourself: http://www.lascalaparis.com/lascala-engl...

The Lizard Lounge at 18 rue du Bourg-Tibourg in the 4th. has a DJ in the basement spining records until the sun comes up.

You might want to try Le Batofar, a disco on a boat moored by 11, quai François-Mauriac in the 13th arr. which is suitable for the whole family. http://www.batofar.org/

The Bus Palladium at 6, rue Fontaine in the 9th is fairly sane and sensible. Here's their website: http://www.lebuspalladium.com/
