Basically it's a piece of wire that is smaller than the load would normally require on the circuit. The wire acts like a fuse and melts when a overload happens like a fuse. However Ford used this for years and Ford went with fuses as the links are expensive and make for hard diagnosis if blown as sometimes they melt but show no outward signs of opening.
