  1. GABAergic neurons are those which secrete GABA (gamma-aminobutyric-acid) as their primary neurotransmitter. Basically GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that inhibits whichever neurons its binds to.It is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Its opposite is glutamate, which is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain.

Function: Basically in the brain, there are 2 types of neurons, projection neurons that connect the brain to lower parts of the nervous system such as brain stem and spinal cord. The other type of neurons are local circuit neurons. Most local circuit neurons are GABAergic and inhibitory, while projection neurons are mostly glutamergic or excitatory.
