This may be the correct answer.  if I am right then there are certain companies that do not make a drug the same exact way as the brand name company does.  Where the difference between the two would be the generic segment.  that would be during the process, of say, making a pill.  The generic company may add something into or leave something out causing the drug to have slightly different side effects to different patients.  This is why some generic medicines do not work for some patients and they have to have the name brand products.


  2. generic is the term used for a drug after it has been licenced but not given a brand name eg. Diazapam is the generic name for Valium a drug is usually licenced for twenty five years which means nobody can manufacture it without licence from the company that invented it.When the licencing period has run out the drug can be manufactured by other companies but they can only use the generic name or invent another as the brand name belongs to the licencing company
