  1. It's just a away that over educated people say "A place"

  2. It is a bit more than just a place.

Think of a book you have read. What was the main geographical setting? What were some other geographical settings in the same book? Think also of location!

continent, near equator, midway between equator and N or S Pole, in the tropics maybe near a desert or under a maple tree, country, state, county, province, city, borough, rural, sub-urban, in a forest, or park, on a baseball diamond, a river close by?

The small detail becomes the setting the larger pieces such as country, on a delta, the western coast of England all would be geographical setting.

Maybe in Germany on the Rhine River during WW 2. Here you have geographical setting plus historical (WW 2).

Cities were and still are built for their location. example:

    - along a river or on the shores of lake/ocean (shipping and natural harbour)

    - because raw materials for industry is found somewhere then the town is built

I hope I've explained it enought for you using examples.
