I currently have Famers and have been a loyal customer to them for several years. I have no priors, no tickets and I'm a great driver. They have just increased my rates and I don't agree with that. Could there be a reason . In the mean time, I think I would like to shop around for different insurance. Thanks for any ideas.

  1. Many years ago I had Progressive Auto insurance and they did the same thing to me. As a result I took a huge risk and drove without it. Then one day I got an offer in the mail from AIG Auto insurance. I called them and they were 25% of the cost that Progressive was when I let that policy go. Ive been with AIG ever since. That was 12 years ago. Im happy with them and they have lowered may rate at each renewal ever since.

  2. There's no one size fits all cheapest insurance company.

Sure, there could be a reason for your rate increase.   Ask your agent.

Meanwhile, call a couple local, independent agents, and ask them for quotes.

  3. Amica and then Geico are tow of the top rated ones on customer satisfaction.  You will need a good driving record to sign up with either one, but I'd try them first.

  4. I just moved from Progressive to State Farm and saved A TON OF CASH. I have a perfect driving record and insured 3 vehicles.

The bad thing about Geico and some of the smaller companies is, they nickel and dime you to death on benefits that State Farm includes without paying extra.

I would only recommend State Farm IF you have a perfect record... if so, try it =)

  5. Each state has manadated minimum coverage. You might be paying for coverage you don't want. Start off by asking  Farmers what coverage on your policy is above the state manadate then determine what you might want to keep. An example is the state doesn't require that your auto insurance provide you will a rental car while your car is in the body shop after an auto accident.

Also, determine what annual deductible you truly need. Many people pay high premiums to have a $250 or $500 minimum deductible but if you were truly in a serious accident, you could make arrangement with the body shop to pay off what you would owe them if you have a $1000 annual deductible with your auto insurance.

Also, don't pay extra for roadside assistance if you already pay for AAA.

Customer service is very important if you have a serious accicent by unfortunately you don't know how a company will work with you until a claim occurs.

I prefer to have a local claims agent who I can call at home because I have been involved in a serious auto accident but the on line insurance companies have 24/7 800 numbers.

Lastly, if you  have any other insurance needs that you can bundle with your auto insurance that will provide you with discounts. That might be renters or homeowners insurance.

In any case, you should NOT have received an increase from Farmers. If you call and threaten to leave they might reduce their premiums, if not, it is time to move on.

There are a lot of insurance companies to chose from but you must purchase from an agency located in your state. Just do a engine search for auto insurance. Some examples are AllState, State Farm, Geico, Progressive, AIG, Travelers, Nationwide and Safeco. Everyone has a good and a bad story about every insurance company. Good luck.

  6. Definately shop around.  That will give you an idea if their rates are "in the ball park".
