What is a good, cheap camera with a focus ability?

I love photography, but all the digital cameras I buy don't have many options in terms of focus and such.

I'm willing to spend up to $400-$500, but would prefer something cheaper. I was thinking of getting a Nikon D40, but if there's something cheaper/better I'd rather get that.

Please only recommend camera's you currently own or have owned in the past.

Go with the D40. The 18-55 kit lens is super sharp, the camera is easy to carry and the battery life is excellent. I know because I own one.
