There's a good place on the beltway between Westheimer and Richmond Ave. but I can't for the life of me recall the name.  The front of the place looks like a ship (can't miss it).  Matsusaka's is on Westheimer just outside the Beltway and they are yummy.

I never found a great Italian place, but Ramano's Macaroni Grill is pretty good (for a chain restaurant)- on Westheimer not far from the Galleria.  I also like Grotto's across 610 from the Galleria.  Not what I call expensive, but not cheap either.
