A business which takes advantage of your talents. I have several blogs which I host on the Internet.The hosting costs me $24 a month and I can host loads of blogs for that.

I set up blogs about things I'm interested in and monetize the blogs with google adsense and affiliate links.

I'm currently making $2000 a month doing this and I only put in a few hours work each week.

I used to sell quite a bit on ebay too, but got sick of the high fees and rubbish new feedback system and also the time spent shipping stuff out.

I would have to agree with what shaunra had to say.  Telecommunications is a very good industry and can be very profitable home based business.  It's a product that everyone uses and pays for on a monthly bases and quite frankly, people would not know how to function without one.  Since the day the industry started, it has done nothing but get bigger and bigger.  I am too young to remember the very first switchboard phone or morse code or any of that, but have seen pictures. Remember the first cell phone, now look at them.  I know a lot of people myself who have home based businesses in the telecommunications industry and they make money every single month regardless if they go out and work one month or not.  That is what billing cycles are all about.  So yeah, I'd have to agree that telecommunciations industry is a very profitable home based business to have!

I've been doing some work with www.elance.com the past week, all the work is home based, data entry, transcription etc. The only thing is you're competing against people from countries where the hourly rate of pay is a lot lower, so not sure if it would be worth it for you.

Its been updated today to include some Craft type jobs which can be done from home, mainly re-distribution, but it possible to make good money from it if you work hard.

So many online jobs are out there. In fact, to do any online job, you need not want to invest anything. Make sure, you dont pay anything to get jobs online. You received a lot of good answers. (don't pay attention to the "thumbs down" People have nothing better to do with their time than rate people answers negative for no reason other than boredom. They should look at the answers and find something better to do with their time!)  Anyway, like I said there are a lot a good reputable businesses out there. What do you want out of it? What would you enjoy doing? How much do you need to make? Figure this out and then start doing your research. Be careful because there is a lot of junk out there but if you thoroughly do your research you will find what you are looking for! I have experience in this and would be happy to help! My sister in law goes to garage sales, finds real bargains, and then sells them on Ebay.  She has done incredibly well.  She averages about $3000 per month profit and only works about 20 hours a week.

The answer to your question depends on what you consider profit. There are many different levels. Several types are gas money, extra spending money, saving for a vacation or a income to be proud of that pays all of your bills on time and allows you to buy what you want when you want and save money. I much perfer the latter. I was able to retire at a early age due to the success of a business I started from my home. I know a lot of people that have their own home based business and do very well in.  Some do child daycare, some are in the telecommunications industry, some are in travel industry, some are into industries that I really don't understand LOL!  Anyhow, the top two from what I've seen to be the most profitable for people is

1. Telecommunications.

2. Child daycare

I know quite a few people in the telecommunciations industry. What they have done is partner up with a 15 year old world wide company.  It's the largest direct selling telecommunications service provider that Donald Trump has endorsed, uses the product and is highly involved.  They have been featured in several magazines like USA Today, Success, Fortune etc.  Inc 500 rated them the 22nd fastest growing company.  They market in services people use every day and pay for anyway.  Services like local and long distance telephone, Internet, VOIP, digital and video phones, Satellite TV and all major cellular phone companies.  They save people money on services that they are already using and paying for every month, and help put people on services that they don't already have.  Once they've helped someone on an existing service, or put someone on a new service, every month these people pay their bills, they make a percentage of it every single month.  That's one way they get paid.

Some people I know have child daycare centers.  I think you know what a child daycare center is all about.  Taking care of little kids while the parents are working.  They feed the children 2 meals a day plus a snack.  Give them room to play while their parents are away.

I know many people in these two industries that make an incredible amount of money working these types of businesses from home.  Most people I know in these two industries make anywhere from $10,000 a month and on up with no overhead expenses.
