  1. Pretty much any sporting .22 rifle currently being manufactured meets your criteria. Start with Savage. They produce a number of excellent quality (and inexpensive .22 rifles such as the mark II and model 62). If Savage's guns are too plain, look at Marlin's offerings. Their model 60 is a good quality, handsome semi-automatic rifle. The same is true of their bolt actions such as the model 925. Then there's Ruger which has the ever-popular 10/22 and the higher end 77/22 rifles. That should give you a start.

  2. There are many many good 22s out there.  You first have to decide what type of action you desire: Semi Auto, Bolt Action, Lever Action or Single Fire.  The most popular semis are the Ruger 10/22, Remington 597, Mossberg 702 Plinkster, Marlin 60 and Savage 64. All are fine rifles and capable of ragged hole shooting, but if you wanna play around with it and customize it, the 10/22 is the way to go.

Bolt actions are more accurate, but at the 22s range we're talking fractions of an inch.  They are also more expensive. The only upside to a bolt is that it is easier to clean/maintain and mimics the action of your hunting rifle.

Lever actions are usually tube fed, so there is no magazine to misplace.  They are also as accurate as the bolt actions, but are not scope friendly as the rear of the scope usually makes it difficult to get to the hammer to c**k/decock.

All being said, pick the one that feels best in your hands and you probably won't go wrong.  I have a Ruger 10/22 Semi and can shoot the bullseye out at 50 yards.  I have a 1952 Marlin 39A and it can shoot smaller than dime sized groups all day long, I have shot the Savage Bolt action and like it alot and I also have a Remington single shot that has fixed sights and is light enough to carry all day in the woods and makes a box of shells last alot longer.

  3. I'll agree it is the CZ-452, but the Lux model, not the American model. The American model has a 22.5" barrel. The Lux has a 28" barrel. The longer barrel will improve the accuracy of sighting. Basically a .22 gains little or nothing with a barrel over about 20" in terms of velocity. CZ are some of the finest rifles made.

Slightly more than $400, this gun will easily be as good or better than the CZ-452, plus probably more fun...

If you want to get away with spending less than $300, consider a Marlin 983 .22 magnum.

Honestly, all .22's are pretty good, even a $100 Mossberg Plinkster will be fun and reasonably accurate. Not a competition type gun certainly, but you don't have to spend $400 either.

  4. yeah what they said!

  5. CZ 452

    Izhmash Biathlon Basic

    Ruger 77/22

    In that order.

  6. I don't think you need to spend 400 for a great .22 cal rifle.

If you want an auto loader, get a ruger 10-22. It rocks and will run about 225 dollars, in basic trim.

I owned and shot bolts, and they do not shoot better than a quality auto or lever, unless you go to the target match single shot guns.

For the best money, look into a Henry rifle. These lever gus are really accurate, really smooth, and are very nice to look at.

    I own 2 Henrys, 2 ruger 10-22s, a Remington bolt, a Marlin, a Browning, several Winchester pumps, and 2 AR7s.

They all shoot great, but the Henrys are my favorite. A basic Henry is about 250 dollars. This will leave plenty for a scope.

PS: Dude, its a .22, you dont need a scope. You need about 500 rounds of practice, and you will kill small game out to 100 yards. Consider that 500 rounds of quality ammo costs about 15 dollars, its easy to get good at shooting. Shooting iron sights makes you better with a scope.

  7. Look into the Ruger 10/22T ---- NOT the regular 10/22 but a 10/22T.  It has a fat target bull barrel on it... It certainly will give a bolt action .22 rifle a run for the money.......

  8. Ruger makes some pretty sweet semi auto's. If you want a bolt or lever action look into a marlin.

  9. A Henry golden boy 2mag they run around $350 and you get an excellent quality fun shooting lever action.
