  1. i found this

"self-reliance is the name of the game"

or "there's nothing like doing it yourself"

    on dict.leo.org

it sound not too bad to me..

  2. most literal translation is "Even is the woman."

I normally have seen it used in situations where women are doing something that traditionally a man would be doing and they are doing it just as well or better.

  3. Sorry, Amber is wrong and Sonne is 80% right.

"Self-reliance is the name of the game" hits the goal, but there are 2 different sayings in Germany: a) Selbst ist der Mann   b) Selbst ist die Frau.   (Mann = man, Frau = woman)

"Selbst ist die Frau" is just a result from "Selbst ist der Mann", which originally was an advertisement campeign in the early 20ies in Germany.

  4. Selfmade women

  5. She can hold her own.

    Not kidding... that's it.

She can hold her own is used as a phrase to say exactly that... Selbst ist die Frau.

  6. Im from Germany and that is a German saying...

okay it mean like "the woman can do all on herself" so she needs nobody and can do everything...
