  1. Avast is a good anti-virus

Windows Defender is a good anti-spyware software.

And SuperAntiSpyware is pretty good too.

  2. Well, I'd try Avira AntiVir or Avast!. Those are my top recommendations. I used AVG 7 and 7.5 for a while and switched to Avast when I found out AVG didn't have a realtime scanner, but they may have added one in 8.0. Avira has built-in anti-rootkit and anti-spyware, so there's a plus right there. Avast you have to register every 6 months. It's free, but it's a bit of an inconvenience. Also, be sure to get a firewall. I recommend Comodo Firewall Pro (comodo.com) with both Defense+ and the Firewall in Training Mode, so you don't get pop-ups every time you do something. (Right click on the tray icon, and you'll see what I mean.) I also recommend Sunbelt Personal Firewall (http://go.sunbeltsoftware.com/?linkid=44... in Simple mode, but it's a 30-day trial and then it goes into the free mode with no HIPS protection, so I'd go with comodo on that one.

Windows Defender is antispyware, not antivirus, and ZoneAlarm is a firewall, and the free version is not good, especially compared to Comodo Firewall and Online Armor.

    Windows® Defender:

Might even check into Avira although I don't like their screens used to push for upgrades:

    ZoneAlarm Firewall:

    All free!

Definitely do not use McAfee or Norton.  Real resource hogs.

  5. If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):

    1. AVG Free

    a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)

    b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses

    Cons: low virus detection

    2. Avast!

    a. Real-time protection

    b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

    c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

    3. Avira AntiVir

    a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

    b. It's cute umbrella icon

    c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

    Cons: A very sluggish update

I advise against Norton anti-virus, it's bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).
