What is a good FREE website to find out who you are related to?

  1. Most of the websites out there, including ancestry.com, need to have a name in their database to begin looking. If your father is John Smith and his father was William Smith, then you need a lot more information to find what you want because these names are extremely common. If John Smith was married to Genevieve Litchfield, then your search gets narrowed down dramatically.

    Your first step should be, therefore, to begin asking living relatives all the names they can remember, birth dates, places, all of that.

    Then go visit any number of websites:

    ancestry.com

    familysearch.org

    genealogy.com

    Several sites are under the wing of Ancestry.com.

  2. You can post questions and other messages on the message boards of ancestry.com, and read the messages

    that others have posted. There are special message boards for specific surnames, for geographic regions such as counties, etc.
