I have a 20 year old GPS and am looking for a newer one to go geocaching with. I don't want to spend a fortune but would like a fairly nice one. I live in Alaska so it has to be a GPS that has Alaska in it. Any suggestions?

  1. I really like my Garmin eTrex.  I have the Vista, which is quite pricey but they also make several other cheaper models of the eTrex.  You should consider adding Garmin's Topo Maps CD if you are serious about Geocaching.

  2. Depending on how much you really want to spend, you could look on line at different retailers, ie. walmart.com or even check out ebay.  Figure out what your budget is.  Then see what GPS units are available in your budget range, and do the research on each one.

FYI. I have a Garmin GPSmap60CSx, and I love it!

  3. I have a Garmin 76CSx and my husband uses a Garmin 60CSx -- both of us have maps for the entire United States and Canada loaded on them.  Both units are virtually the same insofar as the internal electronics and capacity; however, the size of the units is slightly different (60 is smaller) and there are small differences in water resistance and flotation capability.  Both of these are colors units and hold 1000 waypoints. We are extremely happy with both units and find both of them to have very good accuracy most of the time, something that is fairly important for geocaching.  Under heavy cloud cover, deep foliage coverage, high canyons, or tall urban surroundings they tend to hold a fairly reliable signal.  You can find the 60 and 76 for somewhere between $250-350.  Upgrading to a 2GB microSD card (which only holds the maps) is easily accomplished for about $20-25.  Hope this helps.

  4. I'll second the motion for the 60CSx.  I've used one for several years, and haven't seen another with its combination of deep woods coverage, accuracy, map availability, etc.

  5. I have a Garmin GPSMap 76CSx and love it.   Waterproof, floats, and gets over 20 hrs of operation from 2 AA batteries.  I found it online about 2 yrs ago for $310;  most stores like Cabela's still retail it at closer to $400, so shop around no matter what model you decide on.  I'd skip the $170 models; I had one before this one and it sucked by comparison.
