  1. How big is your business?  I see a lot of Fonality in SMB's and Nortel in big co's.

If you need an Enterprise PBX, this is a good guide:

If you are a small business, VoIP News has a resource center full of topics and decision guides:

  2. my job uses the business SPA941 thru globalinx check the site www.5linx.net/lab.. inexpensive and reliable. see notes below

  3. There's quite a few to choose from.  Some of the more popular ones include Asterisk, Fonality, Shoretel, Nortel, Avaya, and Aptella.  Do yourself a favor and sign up for a comparison guide.  I searched "PBX guide" and signed up for one.  Made life a whole lot easier to see a table and compare features at a glance.

  4. Really depends on what you call "high growth." My company grew from 5-25 employees in a year and we were told that we needed a premise premise pbx system. I did not go for it and am really happy with the asterisk system we are still using with 40 employees 2 years later

  5. Do you have an IT staff? It's important to understand whether you will be able to manage the phone system yourself. If not, there are many good hosted options out there that can meet your needs.
