  1. Shorter is better.  And Parabolic is better.  Ideally skis that are parabolic and come up to your lower neck to your nose.  This will give you a balance between speed (longer) and control (shorter).

  2. I agree with the K2 First Love, but also look into head 'lite thang'.  They are specifically built to be light, short, manageable ski's for learners.  It should improve your learning curve and allow you to feel more comfortable in the future on performance skis.  good luck.

  3. K2 First Love no longer than your lower lip is high.  Wonderful forgiving ski.  Who knows about the whole woman-specific design thing but K2's "Love" line definately appeals to women's sense of style.  They are soft, nicely shaped, and (if you live in the US) modestly priced.

  4. in reality there is not such thing as a "slow" ski. shorter skis are easier to move on, different wax can affect your speed as can the make but i dont recommend sabotaging your skis just to go slow. just learn to ski better and control your self, it seems like the best option. also if you want to "go slower" and buy "good slow skis" i dont suggest you buy any as you are clearly not at a high level, so learn to ski better then buy your own pair

  5. you would want a shorter ski becaus e the longer they are the faster they normally go. The slower the skis are depends upon the model, but not by much. I've found Head skis to be a liitle slower than the rest.

  6. Skis aren't made by "speed".  The number of the skis refer to the height.  However, for a beginner, you should wear shorter skis because you'll have more control over how fast or slow you go.  A ski shop or rental place can fit you with skis that will work for you if you tell them your height and that you are a beginner.

  7. It's not a whimp factor but your confidence and conditioning along with proper instruction that allow you to believe that you need a slow ski.  If your boots are a proper fit, you will have the ability to control the ski. The skiis must be waxed to allow them to glide easily over the snow. This does not mean they will go faster, but will glide so you can control them easily. Skiing is a dance with snow and gravity, if you are not smooth your skiis will be erratic and difficult to control.  Condition your body, jump rope and swim every day before your trip. Work out to be in good condition, it won't hurt you to loose 10 lbs will it?

Use your turn shape to control speed, turn the tips more uphill on each turn to slow down. Take a set of lessons from a qualified professional instructor. Enjoy the sport, and make new friends, this is a social sport as much as a snow sport.
