  1. I bought my bike from a bike shop but I have the resources to do so. However, I bought my son a Moongose bike from Walmart 3 years ago and he still rides it today after beating the c**p out of it for all those years!

I would suggest at least talking to a bike shop and then shopping around at Target, *****'s sporting goods, etc to compare.  I know that d**k's carries the Diamondback brand which are pretty decent bikes.

I think the people on this board should be promoting cyclying...not LBS's!!!!!!!!

  2. depends what type of riding your going to do. there are "hybrid" bikes which are made out of aluminum so there light and there in a upright position so there comfortable. and the price is around $250-$400. so they are not that expensive. but the best thing you can do is to go to your local bike shop and check all the different types of bikes out. DO NOT BY FROM WALMART OR TARGET THOSE BIKES DONT LAST LONG. they will break quickly.

ok if its a flat trail then i would recommend checking this bike out

  3. Finding a bike in your price range is easy. Despite the fear most people have about walking into a bike shop, you need to keep in mind that they are there to serve you. Most bike shops have models anywhere from $250 and up.

    Here's what to do.

Decide how you want to ride the bike... Puttering around the neighborhood? Club and charity rides? Taking off with the kids? Screaming down a ski slope at 100 mph? Exploring the trails at a local park?

Once you have worked that out, think about budget. Consider what you paid for the last pair of shoes, or the cost of a night for two out on the town. If you like video games, what did you pay for your controller and a couple of games? For a new rider, a nice all terrain bike can be had for $400 or less, and a solid road bike for about $600.

Still too much? If you stop at Starbucks every morning for your latte, think about what you spend for a year of them. Or a year of cokes. Suddenly a bike that will last you years has a cost that is within reach.

Now the fun part. Visit as many bike shops as you can- do NOT include discount and department stores. Talk with people. Learn. Test ride. Then, pick your favorite.

BMX PAUL: Think about what you just told the asker.

EDIT: Jeff... did you read the question? He wants to ride the bike every day for several miles. Definitely not department store goods.

  4. I'm sorry, but if you want the most safe, plesurable bike experience you need to go to a local bike shop.  Wether you go to Wal-Mart or a local bike shop you are getting what you pay for.  Wal-Mart and Target do not have employees with expertise in cycling.  You have a person who stocks shelves putting your bike together which can be dangerous.  My tween-aged neice saved her money to buy a mountain bike at Target.  It was assembled incorrectly and she got in a serious accident, got road rash, mutiple contusions and broke her glasses.

I just bought a road cycle/mt bike hybrid made by Specialized for $350 at my local bike shop.  It was worth every penny.  They took into account my needs and ability and selected the perfect bike that I could afford.  They also offer free service for a year.  This bike makes me excited to ride.

If you can't afford to purchase a bike shop bike new try Craig's List or another classified service.  There are tons of people who get hooked on cycling that want to trade up for newer better models.
