  1. +1 for the Logitech line.  Good remotes and easy to program.

  2. The Omega 650 is awesome and has a huge screen on it.  You can program "macros" on it, fairly easily.  This will allow you to press one button and the remote will perform several functions, such as turning on all of your components at once, and switching between multiple sources.  About $150.00 on Ebay.

  3. Gotta agree with the first answerer.  The Harmony is a great value at $99 and can be found at your local RadioShack.

  4. You cant go wrong with the Harmony 880, check slickdeals.net before you go out and buy one they had a deal last week for 94.99 for this remote...

  5. The "Hamony" brand from logitech. Also "Universal Remote Control" brand.

Basically any "learning" remote will usually control everything. It is the "code only" remotes that have limitations.

I use the Harmony 880. it is pretty nice. I do not have any complaints.

Learning remotes take a while to set up as does any truely universal remote it is the nature of the beast. But once it is done it is worth it.

  6. Take a look at the Logitech Harmony and the One-for-All remote controls. I have a Harmony, which was a bit tedious to set up but a dream to use.

You have to set up via USB. It comes with software which contacts the Logitech site to get details of the devices you have. If you have popular standard devices (i.e. ones in their databases), it will set things up for you. Very nice. But if your device isn't on their database, you have to "record" the buttons for the functions you want to mimic. Basically you sit there pressing a button on your original remote, and then one on the harmony... for each function you want to copy over.

    I'd still recommend it though.
