Question:

What is a good antibiotic for a horse with swelling on the neck (following a bee sting)?

I had a horse a couple of years ago have the same thing happen on his chest- a vet had to come and drain the swelling because that horse refused to move (so I understand draining it)- but the odd thing about this- is that the swelling started on one side- and now has moved to the other. It also happens to be over the lymph node area- but I don't think that this is strangles. It has been longer than 30 days since the first swelling formed (where an obvious wound mark occured)- and he doesn't seem to be lethargic or unable to eat- So I figured we should try a antibiotic. Anyone have any ideas?

  1. I was going to say what you need is an antihistamine, not an antibiotic, but you say it's been like this for 30 days?  Then what you need is a vet.

  2. You really should get your vet's advice for this.  Giving antibiotics is not a good idea if the horse doesn't need them.  If the horse does...per your vet's advice...then they will also recommend which kind.  Where I live, they can be purchased at any feed store.

I keep Pen-Aqueous Penicillin ProcaineG in my fridge for when needed.  It has covered everything I've ever needed so far.

But I STILL call my vet and get his advice BEFORE I use it.

  3. You should call the vet to see it before doing anything.  You don't have a diagnosis....just some assumptions that could be wrong.  Antibiotics are for bacterial infections and different ones are used to fight different types of bacteria...there is no such thing as a "good antibiotic for a....swelling on the neck".

  4. You need a vet to make sure there are no other problems.

Just randomly giving antibotics is never a good idea.

You could actually make the problem worse.

    Get a vet.

  5. Dexamethasone(Dex) should help the swelling until you can confer with the vet for the antibiotic, but I don't know the correct dosage.
