I am a brand new aquarium owner. It is a 10 gallon with one fish. I got it from a neighbor and it came prepared and everything. The only problem is that i know nothing about taking care of fish. Does anyone know a great book for taking care of fish. (I will be getting rid of the fish for it is too big and start from scratch.)(I am also going towards more tropical fish)

All help will be greatly appreciated =D

  1. fish caring for dummies jk umm i think the main stuff you need to know is the feeding prosses what fish can be together i have a ten gal fish and heres one of the major things you need to know is that 1 inch of a fish equals 1 gallon so keep that in mind and a good set to go together is 1 or 2 guppies some tetras and shrimp (5 or 6) cuz shrimp are great bottem feaders but you should feed them once or twice a day

  2. "The everything tropical fish book". A pretty good book that covers feeding, breeding, diseases like everything you need to know. IF you have a local Ollie's you can find fish books really cheap there.

  5. Don't get me wrong, books are good, but there is sooo much information on the web that I don't think that it would be necessary for you to buy one.

Just try researching these main points, and since your going for a freshwater tropical tank the biggest thing to learn are the fish themselves.

I will give you links to great articles on all the topics that I cover. Personally, I goto this site all the time.

    Learn:

How to setup a tank, such as placement. What's great about this article is that the tank that's being set up is a ten gallon.

Cycling your tank. This is by far the most important thing. If you do not let your tank cycle the odds of your fish dying are at least %75. Only very small fish such as tetras, minnows, rosbaras and such will survive.

Once your tank is setup, cycled, and your just needing to feed the fish then read about how to properly feed your fish.

The only thing I wish that this site had is a 101 on how to introduce new fish into the tank.

First let me mention that it is very easy to spread fish diseases from one tank to another (stores tank to your tank). So when you’re buying fish don't buy from a place such as wal-mart at all. Every wal-mar that I've been to, even brand new ones, doesn't know how to take care of fish. Their fish are under feed and usually disease ridden since all the tanks share the same water (not smart).

Petsmart and petco are all right, not the best but usually you can get decent fish from them. The best place to go is like a mom and pop shop. Locally owned shops will take pride in their fish and will have more knowledge then any chain store, but these type of store are rare, I have only one that I know of in a five hour driving time (minnesota). At chain stores just be sure to not buy any fish from a tank that has sick or dead fish, the thing that is killing or killed the fish has most likely spread to the fish that still look healthy.

Once you have the fish that you want, it's healthy, swimming good and just looks great, then your set to go and can bring it home.

Now you need to learn about introducing new fish to your tank. First off, never just poor the whole bag of water into your tank that the fish came in. The water could contain parasites, viruses, bad bacteria (you'll know the difference between good and bad bacteria after reading about cycling), and other bad things for the fish already in your tank.

So when adding a new fish to your tank take the bag with the fish in it, grab a net, go over to the sink and poor the fish into the net. This helps you get the fish in a safe manner, and it will make sure that the only thing that your adding to the tank is the fish and no nasties from the water. :)

Hope I helped somewhat, summed up all you need to learn is setting up a tank and cycling.

Just remember to have fun :)

    Good Luck
